‘Come From Away,’ Hit Broadway Musical, Being Made Into Feature Film

Come From Away,” the Tony Award-winning musical hit, will be made into a feature film. The Mark Gordon Company has picked up rights to the Broadway show and has enlisted Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who wrote the book, music, and lyrics to “Come From Away,” to adapt the feature screenplay for the project. Mark Gordon will produce.

The show is set in the week following the Sept. 11 attacks and focuses on the passengers aboard 38 planes that were ordered to land unexpectedly in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador. Forced to remain grounded, the small-town residents open their hearts and homes to the visitors — their generosity standing in stark contrast to the terrorist attacks. The show was a sleeper hit, propelled by strong reviews and seven Tony nods. It picked up a statue for direction and nearly nabbed the best musical statue, but was beat out by “Dear Evan Hansen.”

MGC will finance the film and Entertainment One (eOne) will handle worldwide distribution on “Come From Away.” Gordon has produced an array of films, including the upcoming “Molly’s Game” with Jessica Chastain and “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair.”

Sankoff and Hein are a Canadian married writing team. Their first show, “My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding,” played at the Toronto Fringe Festival and has played across North America. They are represented by Max Grossman at Abrams Artists Agency.

MGC’s Sara Smith and Jenna Berger will oversee the project for the company.
