Emmy Awards: Drama Actress Winner Tatiana Maslany ‘So Lucky to Be on a Show That Puts Women at the Center’

Tatiana Maslany won lead actress in a drama for “Orphan Black,” surprising observers at the 2016 Emmy awards. A fan favorite for the sci-fi drama series, Maslany was nominated last year for the first time.

“I feel so lucky to be on a show that puts women at the center,” Maslany said while accepting her award.

Backstage, after winning, Maslany spoke to members of the press more about representing women on TV, saying, “It’s become a real point of pride for all of us on this show… We feel responsible in continuing to tell those stories… there is an immense joy in getting to tell women’s stories that we don’t normally see.”

Maslany has been nominated twice for “Orphan Black,” though this marks her first win. Critics have long praised her work in the BBC America series, in which she plays numerous clones, often playing scenes solely opposite herself. As for juggling her many roles, the actress said, “It’s just in the specifics and really digging deep to discover to instincts…so that I’m not re-treading territory from another one. That challenge of the job is what’s so enthralling to me…it’s really a dream for any actor.”

The Canadian-born actress — who has appeared in films including “Eastern Promises,” “The Vow” and “Woman in Gold” — said she was shocked by her victory.

“I didn’t expect it at all. It’s such an honor,” Maslany said backstage. “The category I’m in is all these women I’ve looked up to for so long and whose work I so admire, so I was not expecting this at all.”

In her category, Maslany was up against Keri Russell in “The Americans,” “Empire” star Taraji P. Henson, last year’s winner Viola Davis in “How to Get Away With Murder,” Claire Danes in “Homeland” and Robin Wright in “House of Cards.”
